WordPress Emoji Plugins to Add (or Remove) Emoji from a Site
Last Updated August 28, 2023
It seems strange but there was a time that emojis weren’t common in online content. Now, everyone of all age groups and backgrounds is familiar with these cartoony little characters. WordPress site owners have found emojis to be implemented into the core product in a very basic way for years now. Of course, not everyone is happy with that implementation. WordPress emoji plugins have sprung up to help solve the most common issues.
Today, we are going to take a look at some of the most popular emoji plugins that WordPress developers have released to the public. We hope you can find at least one plugin to help you deal with, or expand upon, the emoji support built into WordPress.
Popular WordPress Emoji Plugins
Each of the WordPress emoji plugins on our list is available, for free, from WordPress.org. You can manually download the plugin file and upload it to your site. Or, if you prefer, they can be installed and activated from the Plugins screen in the WordPress admin.
We have summarized the features of each plugin in this post. Many of them offer similar features but we hope to present a wide enough spectrum of options to keep you interested. These plugins, as we mentioned, are completely free so there are no premium versions to worry about.
Let’s get started and find the right emoji plugin for you to use on your WordPress site.
Disable Emojis
We’re going to start our look at WordPress emoji plugins with one of the most simple. It hands a very popular request that many WordPress developers have. Disable Emojis is a simple and GDPR-friendly plugin with only one task: disable the WordPress emoji feature from your site.
It is something to note that the emojis will still end up working in browsers that have their support already built in. All the plugin really does is removes the extra code that is usually added to old browsers so that they can support these emojis. Rest assured that this doesn’t affect the GDPR compliance of your site. This plugin only disables the DNS prefetching of the emojis inside WordPress.

Emoji Settings
Emoji Settings gives you the option to quickly enable or disable emojis conversion on your WordPress site. For example, when you input a smiley like 🙂 it automatically changes to the matching emoji.
